Like many, I was not shocked when Rachel Alexandra won the Preakness, but I was beyond flummoxed when Calvin Borel shot her out of 13 hole and gunned her to the lead. We all knew that the filly was a need-to-lead type and that Calvin had two options: Blast off and try to wire the field, or lay back and run clear of the bullies, and when the idiot colts were too winded to care, pounce from a safe stalking position. Had you told me before the race that she was going to break from the outside post, blister the initial six panels in 1:11 and finish the mile at 1:35, I would have pulled my hedge trifecta off the tote. With those fractions, you had to believe that in the final 3/16th Mine That Bird would close like a quarterback on prom night and beat Rachel to the line. But the filly would have none of this and did her best Joan Crawford as she stared down the little gelding and held on for the win.
